2013: A Makeup Review

1. Which makeup brand stood out to you most in 2013?
ELF was definitely the brand of the year for me. I had heard a little about them, and soon found out that they had an Australian website. Once I had a look around and saw the amazing prices I knew I had to try them out. I was so impressed with the quality considering the low price tag, that I now have quite a nice collection of ELF items. I would go so far as to say that probably 30% of my makeup is ELF.

2. Best new discovery of 2013?
Brows brows brows. Confession time: in my 10+ years of using makeup, I never did my brows, until this year. I always saw these amazing power brows and just never thought it would look good on me. I was so afraid of looking like Dr Frank N. Furter:

 photo FrankenfurterEyebrow.gif

My first brow purchase was a simple, cheap pressed-powder in the darkest brown I could find. I still use it now, it's a pretty good product for day-to-day use, but I have since upgraded to Illamasqua's Brow Cake in the shade Motto. I also use pencil eyeliners to sharpen the lines of my brow. I am still a beginner but I think I'm getting the hang of it now!

3. Best re-discovery -- A product that you fall in love with over and over again?
This would have to be Rimmel lipsticks. Rimmel was basically my first go-to makeup brand, and I have always loved their range of shades. The Kate Moss line is gorgeous, and I am very excited to see the Rita Ora collection in 2014.

4. Best seasonal product of 2013?
Firstly, a little disclaimer: I used to be a goth. I still have some residual gothness in my system. I am definitely 'alternative', and my makeup does tend to lean towards bold, dark eyes and a fierce red lip. However, I seem to be evolving, as I am currently really enjoying neutrals, nudes and light glosses for summer. It feels a lot fresher in the heat, and it feels a lot more light and airy than the heavy makeup I used to wear. I think as the weather cools I may bring in some more dark lipsticks, and smoke out the eyes, but for now I am enjoying a more natural look.

6. Most regretted purchase of 2013?

I would have to say the Hard Candy Flat to Fab Mascara. It was a flop, completely unusable for me, and it hurt my heart to have to throw out what was essentially a full tube of mascara (even though it was only fun-sized).

7. Youtube highlights of 2013?

Wayne Goss. Oh how I love him. He's down-to-earth, funny, and really great at simplifying and explaining the process behind makeup techniques. He covers all of the bases, and his channel is just perfect for beginners right through to makeup mavens. Plus he loves (and references) Nighty Night which kind of makes him my soulmate.

8. Best makeup tool of 2013?
Without a doubt, my ELF Studio Powder Brush. It is a gorgeous, flat top brush which is multipurpose. I have found it great for liquid and cream foundations, wonderful for applying powder, and it even works as a general buffing and blending brush for bronzer and blush (oh my there was a lot of alliteration in that sentence).

9. What are the products you are excited to try in 2014?

I'm definitely looking forward to Rita Ora's Rimmel collection, I am imagining lots of bright colours and rocking red lip products. I am also desperate to get my hands on the Too Faced Haute Chocolate Palette.

10. What are your Makeup Resolutions for 2014?
Well, for that you'll have to tune in to tomorrow's post!

ELF Haul - Part One: Tools

As you may know if you read yesterday's HAULiday post, I got some great ELF products for Christmas. I wanted to do a more in depth look and review of these items, as ELF is currently my favourite budget cosmetics brand and I can't stop talking about them! To avoid bombarding you with images, I'm going to split the haul up into two posts.

So here's the haul in it's totality:

Happy HAULidays!

It's Boxing Day and I'm currently recovering from an overwhelming day of overeating, overexcitement and oversharing. Families are fun. Anyway, it was a wonderful day, and I got some gorgeous new makeup and beauty items from my family. I thought I'd share my Christmas Haul with y'all:

December Empties

Welcome to the second instalment of my monthly "Empties" post. Here are the products that met their demise this month:

Saturday, 21 December 2013

Maybelline Baby Lips

Recently my local grocery store has had a great sale on Maybelline products, and I just couldn't resist picking up some Maybelline Baby Lips, especially for just $1.99 each!

Hard Candy's Flat to Fab Mascara

Those of you who read my review of the Hard Candy's Kiss and Make Up set know that I recently received a little fun-sized tube of their Flat To Fab Mascara. I didn't try it immediately as I was already wearing a full face of makeup and didn't want to disturb the equilibrium. But today, I got the chance to try it, and... well...

The Redemption of the White Eyeliner

So, if any of you read yesterdays "Makeup Misses" post, you'll know that one of the products that failed to impress was ELF's Eye Widening Pencil in Pearl White.

BUT, I turned to the wonderful subreddit 'Makeupaddiction', and they gave me some great ideas on uses for this pencil, so it wouldn't turn out to be a complete flop.

Makeup Misses: December Edition

Today I'm going to be doing a rundown of my most recent "makeup product flops". Sometimes you get a product, be it from a new brand or a trusty favourite, that just doesn't live up to your expectations. Here are my two most recent fails.

Firstly, Rimmel's Fix & Perfect Primer in shade 001.

NP Set: Smoke Signals

Recently I managed to snag yet another eBay bargain, a limited edition 12 eyeshadow palette from the NP Set brand, which is an affordable range that comes from Napoleon Perdis. This eyeshadow set, entitled "Smoke Signals" promises smokey, dramatic glamour.
The set has a range of deep dark hues, with a few vivid colours thrown in for good measure. The palette is on the smaller size, so perfect to fit in your handbag!

Vera Wang: Pink Princess

Today I received a lovely little sample of Vera Wang's fragrance Pink Princess.

Hard Candy: Eye-Cons Kit

My second review of Hard Candy's "Beauty To Go" collections is the Eye-Cons kit. This little box of wonder contains a mini eyeshadow, a glitter eyeliner and an eyeshadow primer.

Hard Candy: Kiss and Make Up

Today I'll be doing a little review of one of Hard Candy's "Beauty To Go" sets. This one is called Kiss and Makeup, and contains a tube of 'Flat To Fab' Mascara, a tube of Plumping Serum Lipgloss, and a tube of 'Eye Def' Glitter Eyeshadow.

Box a little smushed in the post.

Matte Nails with Iridescent Tips

I decided it's time for Round Two of the Matte Nail/Fancy Tips attempt at making my nails look fancy. I have been practicing and I think it has paid off! I decided to add a little colour to the mix too.

I used Avon's Violetta as the matte purple base, and Sinful Color's "Let Me Go" as the accent colour.

"Let Me Go" is a gorgeous iridescent lavender/blue/green sheer polish, and I was interested to see what it would do on top of matte purple. Wanna see?

How To Brow

Today I'm going to be showing my brow routine. Now, doing my brows is still a relatively new thing to me. For years I just left them be, all sparse and sad looking. But recently I have discovered what a difference it makes to your face to have them filled in, especially considering that I wear thick framed glasses.

Unfortunately, filling in brows isn't quite as easy as you'd initially think.

Brush Overhaul

It's time for a brush collection overhaul!

I recently received some new brushes that I got for a bargain price on eBay, and I was so impressed with the quality that it made me realise my collection of brushes probably needs a good sorting out. I have amassed quite a collection over the years, but probably only use 40% of them on a regular basis. Since I'm trying to clean up my makeup battlestation a bit, today seemed like a good day to tackle the brushes.

So here is my brush collection before I started the chop:

Matte Nails with Glossy Tips

Today I decided to attempt to recreate a look I have seen circling around Pinterest - the matte black nail with a glossy French tip.

Disclaimer: I am a complete amateur when it comes to painting my nails. Having said that, practice makes perfect so I hope you can forgive smudges and wobbles and whatnot while I improve my skills!

I begun by painting my nails with a matte black nail polish I purchased from Avon. The great thing about this polish is that it only needs two coats to provide full coverage, and it dries so quickly. By the time you have done the first coat on both hands, the first hand is ready to be painted again. Brilliant for a quick manicure on short notice.

Here are the nails with their base matte coat:

Covergirl Clump Crusher Extensions Mascara

Last week I picked up the much revered Covergirl Clump Crusher Extensions Mascara. I got it for the bargain price of $10, and having heard so many rave reviews I knew I had to give it a try. I have something like 5 eyelashes. It's ridiculous. I have basically no eyelashes, they are sparse, straight and generally not happy about being on my face. Up until now I have only ever used Rimmel Mascara, but I have been finding that it clumped and felt quite flaky over time.

So here is the Clump Crusher before I got my grubby hands onto it:

My Skincare Regimen

Having briefly mentioned it in an earlier post, I thought it would be a good idea to give a more in depth synopsis of my daily skincare routine. As a bit of background, I have acne prone skin. For a long time it was constant, as part of my OCD is dermatillomania (a compulsive behaviour which manifests as skin picking), but after a lot of determination I have largely overcome that, which has improved my skin dramatically. However I am still prone to hormonal outbreaks and have very sensitive skin. I have combination skin, often dry in the T-zone area and more oily around the nose and chin.

Now I've given you too much information, on to the regimen!

Makeup at 20,000 Degrees

December is here, which means here in sunny Australia it is officially the first day of summer! Temperatures are going to rise, outdoor occasions will be in full swing, and of course, Christmas is just around the corner.

For me, this is the time to change up my makeup routine. I have to be more careful with my skin, and full coverage foundation and powder goes out of the window, lest I look like this:

So here is how my makeup routine changes with the heat:

November Favourites

Welcome to the first installment of monthly favourites! These posts will feature my top picks of each month; they might be something new, or a trusty favourite. I will do a few cosmetic items, as well as some general favourite things. So on we go!

Cosmetics:

Lipstick: ELF Studio Matte Lip Colour - Rich Red

This is a great lipstick, packaged like a twist up liner, but nice and chunky so you get good coverage. This red is very pigmented and rich, and I love that it manages to be matte and long lasting without feeling dry or powdery. And at only $5.99, how could one resist?

November Empties

So one of the things I am hoping to turn into a regular (perhaps monthly?) post is "Empties". This will basically be me showing off empty packaging. HOW EXCITING! But obviously this will show you what products I've been using (and liking) enough to finish them off. Now as some of you may know, when it comes to beauty products, often things get chucked or expire before they are finished, so for something to get completely emptied is an indicator that it was a good purchase!

So, on to this months empties!

Avon Smooth Minerals Lipstick

Lipstick time!

I have some lovely fun-sized lipstick samples left over from my days as an Avon Lady and I thought I'd give 'em a little swatchy-swatch. I should note at this point that I am no longer an Avon Rep, and have no affiliation with the company. This was all bought with my own money.
Onto the swatches!

With flash:
L-R: Plum Craze, Rosy Brown, Rose Garnet, Pink Berry, Apricot Glow, Cranberry, Gilded Rose, Pink Sands

Concrete Minerals: Naughty & Nice

Today I will be doing a little swatch-style review of a lovely collection by Concrete Minerals, called "Naughty and Nice".

The collection features four loose eyeshadow pots (each weighing in at 1.5g) and one 'Sexy Lips' Lip Tint. It all comes in a very nice collection tin:

Timey Wimey Nails

This blog needs some pictures!

So, in honour of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who this weekend, I went all spacey on m'nails. Now I am still a rookie when it comes to all things lacquer, but I thought I'd show these off as I thought they looked groovy.

The tools of the trade:

Getting To Know You (Well... Me)

Okay, so since this place is so sparkly fresh, I think this is a good time to do a little "Getting To Know You" thing. Let's get to know each other shall we? Shall we? Yes we shall.

1. What was your favourite food when you were a child?
Stuffing, specifically Paxo Sage & Onion stuffing. On one occasion, when I was about 12, I had a sleepover where one of our main snacks was just a big arse plate of stuffing. Oh yes.

2. What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?
Currently it's a tie between 'A Tap Dancer's Dilemma' by Diablo Swing Orchestra, and 'Maniac' by Caravan Palace

3. What is one of your favourite quotes?
"If you're going through hell, keep going." - Winston Churchill

4. What’s your favourite indoor/outdoor activity?
Reading. Voraciously.

5. What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
I am the WORST at ironing. It's not even worth bothering, that's how bad I am. Hate it.

6. What is your favourite form of exercise?
I'm not hugely active. I am a sedentary creature, but I find walking to be very relaxing, and yoga can be very grounding.

7. What is your favourite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Time of day: Late evening, when all is quiet and I can do my thing.
Day of the Week: Friday, there's just something groovy about it.
Month of the year: December, I love the energy - but hate the heat.

8. What is your favourite body part?
Eyes, I think they say a lot about a person. I also have a weird thing for eyeballs.

9. What sound do you love?
My son laughing, my husband attempting to sing, the sound of heavy rain, and the smooth dulcet tones of David Bowie.

10. If you could throw any kind of party, what would it be like and what would it be for?
I would throw a Halloween party, go all out with gross foods, great music, costumes, the whole shebang.

11. If you could paint a picture of any scenery you’ve seen before, what would you paint?
The coves at Elephant Rocks, Southwest Australia.

12. If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?
I wouldn't, I like the passage of life. Evolving, learning, changing, overcoming.

13. If you knew the world was ending in 2014,  what would you do differently?
Go outside more, show my son more of the world, be more generous and giving.

14. If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
Doctor Who. Preferably the 4th Doctor. He might even let me stroke his hair.

15. If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
I would have loved to have been at Woodstock. The atmosphere looked crazy and amazing.

16. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I would love to improve my piano playing. I wish I could play some of the beautiful classics.

17. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be?
Right now, this blog. Although you'll probably get a different answer in a week. I change my mind a lot.

18. If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?
I've always loved Evelyn.

19. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
This is tough. Either Stephen Fry, Derren Brown, or Mark Gatiss.

20. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Buy our very own house. Renting is restrictive.

21. If you were reincarnated as an animal/drink/ice cream flavour, what would it be?
Animal: I'm pretty sure I'm destined to become a big, fat, black cat.
Drink: Dr Pepper, because then I would finally love myself.
Ice Cream Flavour: French Vanilla.

22. Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?
I've never been mistaken for her, but I've been told I look like Garcia from Criminal Minds, if she was a goth.

23. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
I'll either put makeup on for funsies, or get lost in Reddit.

24. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
I'm not sure on specific songs, but my life is a little deranged, so lots of Diablo Swing Orchestra, Caravan Palace, ProleteR and Rammstein.

25. What was the last movie, TV show or book that made you cry or tear up?
The 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who. DON'T YOU CRY TOM BAKER OR I'LL CRY!

26. When was the last time you had an amazing meal?
I made a kickass mulberry, blueberry and raspberry Pavlova yesterday. So good.

27. What do you miss most about being a kid?
The constant excitement, learning, new experiences, and general zest for life.

28. When was the last time you were nervous?
Oh god I'm always nervous. I'm nervous right now.

29. What story does your family always tell about you?
When I was roughly a year old, my family went on holiday to Sardinia. Whilst relaxing on the beach my dad noticed that I had wandered off, and found me playing with the massive wild (and probably dangerous to a baby) dogs that roam the beach.

30. At what age did you become an adult?
Probably not entirely until I had my son at 23. Before that I was mature, but since having my son I have had to really look at my life, and cast aside some old habits and thought patterns. I'm responsible for another person now, I don't come first anymore.

Soon that's a little bit about me. I feel we have all learned something today.

Welcome Stranger...

Welcome to the blog!

This little corner of the Internet will be devoted to some of my favourite things; beauty and horror, cosmetics and oddities, the bizarre and the beautiful. I'm not going to try and stick with one theme as I know my OCD will not allow it, so peppered here and there might be some stories about life with agoraphobia and anxiety, movie reviews, makeup reviews, hauls and unboxings, tags, and all sorts of other probably-not-so-interesting things.

Basically this blog SHOULD be a Vlog on YouTube, it would probably be much easier, but I am not really big on having my face in front of the camera. Little vlogs may appear over time as I gain confidence, but for now let's get to know each other on a textual basis.

Enjoy your stay!
